Shared Contour Lines in Art, My Drawing of Lovers

In honour of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would discuss my above sketch, Lovers and the shared contour lines. The lines aren’t as delicate as drawn as I needed to make them more visible with Photoshop for a computer image. The contour line of the back of the male’s head and neck is shared with the right side of the head and face of the female. This shared line adds intimacy to the two portraits. Matisse used this technique in many of his drawings.

Sealing Watercolor Paper for Heavy Body Acrylic Paints

My above painting, Crashing Waves by Lighthouse, Ribadeo was painted on sealed watercolor paper. While I paint on canvas, I also use sealed watercolor paper and other supports. By sealing paper I can use my acrylic paints and mediums as I would oil paints. I can paint straight from the tube, wet into wet and glaze layers of paint. I have been asked how I seal watercolor paper. I prefer smooth paper to cold press or rough paper as I like to create my own textures. I tape the paper to a board with masking tape. This will leave a ½ inch white border on my completed painting. I then lay matte medium over the paper. This medium strengthens the paper and acts as a fixative. Once dry, I next lay a clear gloss medium over the support. This makes the paper non absorbent and allows me to use my acrylic paints as I would oil paints. I like to glaze either a muted warm or cool imprimatura over this dry layer. Once my completed painting is dry, I varnish it.

Use of Brush Work in Art, Expressive Paintings by Franz Hals

Antwerp artist Franz Hals (1580-1666) was well known for his portrait paintings. His loose brushstrokes and use of colors resulted in an expressiveness not achieved by his fellow artists. Hals’ above painting, Malle Babbe (1633-1635) conveys an impulsive image. His free brushstrokes depict a wonderful communicative portrait.

Composition & Color, My Painting "The Rose"

This is my painting, The Rose. I was interested in the rhythmic curves of the flower’s petals. My simple composition and colors convey this objective. I used 2 colors; red and green. These colors are a complementary pair on the triadic color wheel. The bottom image shows my art work in 4 values (gray scale, Photoshop posterized). This limited value image successfully conveys both the flower and the rhythmic curves of the petals.

Focal Point in Painting & Composition. 3 Art Studies

The compositions of most good paintings have a focal point. A focal point attracts the viewer’s eyes. The focal point attracts viewers by location and/or elements of art. In Goya’s painting, The Third of May (1814), the focal point is the man with the white shirt. The white is the lightest value (gray scale) in the painting. The man’s shape is emphasized by his upraised arms. The rifles point at him. If one looks at the man’s location and considers the rule of thirds (a location of pleasing proportions; emphasis: similar to rabatment and the Golden Mean), he is approximately one third from the left side of the canvas. There can be a secondary focal point in a painting but the secondary focal point should not compete with the main focal point. In my opinion, the secondary focal point is the first man on the right with the rifle. His silhouette is distinct from the other soldiers. He stands in front of a light square form.

In my painting, Crashing Waves by Lighthouse, the lighthouse is my focal point. It has the lightest and darkest values. The lighthouse stands isolated. The horizontal distance to the lighthouse is the same as the vertical side of the painting. This rabatment is another place of emphasis. In this painting my secondary focal area was the waves.

In my painting, Storm Cloud over Land, the church is my focal point. It is the lightest value against the darkest value. The shape of the building is different from the other shapes in the painting. The diagonal lines in the foreground point to the church. The church is isolated. It is close to the golden mean of the painting.

Painting Crashing Waves by Lighthouse, Spain

This is my new painting, Crashing Waves by Lighthouse, Ribadeo, Spain. My primary idea for this painting was emotional like my painting, Storm Cloud over Land (see prior post). Both paintings have cool dominant temperatures. Both paintings have diagonal shapes. In the painting Crashing Waves, I conveyed the movement of the waves contrasted against the strong vertical lighthouse. Unlike my painting, Storm Cloud, my brushstrokes in this new painting’s sky are smooth.

Painting a Coming Storm; Convey Power & Fury

The primary idea for my painting, Storm Cloud over Land was emotional and not descriptive. I wanted to convey the power and fury of the coming storm. The painting has a cool dominant temperature. I have limited it to 4 values (dark, light; gray scale). I try to limit my paintings to 4 values. I have seen some wonderful old master paintings that have been limited to 3 values. The dominant value is middle tone; there is a large dark value. The shapes and lines are primarily diagonal to enhance the tension and dynamic idea. I decided to make the dark cloud with visible brush work to again create movement. While most clouds are painted with smooth brush work, this did not meet my objective. Color Contrast in Painting

I wrote about color complements and the Triadic and Munsell color wheels. In my above unfinished color study, I used the complementary pair, orange (yellow red) and blue. On both color wheels these hues are complements and enhance each other when placed side by side. It is best to mute (dull) one hue, i.e. blue; this will increase the intensity of the pure orange. If you mix complements as I did in my sky, the colors are dulled. In the value image (gray scale), you see the limited number of shapes and their oblique directions. The dominant value is mid tone; this contrasts with the smaller amounts of light and dark values. The dominant color temperature is warm. I posterized this image to 2 values (notan) in Photoshop. You can still read the image and I have achieved a dynamic design.

Famous British artist, William Turner (1775 - 1851) painted color, light and emotion. His art was studied by the impressionists. The above painting, Snowstorm (1842) is a wonderful example of Turner’s use of intensity, atmospheric effect and vibration. This painting makes viewers feel the force of nature. Study of Color in Painting, Triadic and Munsell Color Wheels

I painted the above study to examine color in light. The first color wheel was based on three primary colors (triadic color wheel). French chemist, M. E. Chevreul established the theory of simultaneous contrast published in 1839 (complementary colors enhance each other) and the interaction of colors. The Impressionists and Post impressionists were influenced by Chevreul’s findings and used complements to enhance colors. Around 1936, American artist, Albert Munsell, created a color system based on hue, value and intensity. His color wheel used 5 primary colors. I have previously written on both color wheels. Most artists use the Munsell color wheel which has more accurate complements. In my above painting, I used a Munsell split complementary color scheme (green yellow, red purple, purple blue). AGO Exhibit, Chagall and the Russian Avante Garde

Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario is hosting the exhibit, Chagall and the Russian Avant-Garde (to January 15, 2012). Chagall was born in Russia in 1887. He spent much of his life in exile but his work was influenced by his Russian and Jewish background. His work was also influenced by the French post impressionists. His use of color complements are seen in his above painting, Double Portrait with Wine Glass (1917-1918). Chagall uses the color green and red to enhance his painting. He used a green outline around the red jacket of the male figure to create vibrancy. Compare this painting with the color Chagall used in his painting, Cemetery Gates (1917).

Split Complementary Colors, Intensity in Paintings

There are several color (hues) schemes artists use to harmonize paintings. A split complementary color scheme is a color and 2 colors on either side of its complement. In the above paintings, I used the blue green hue and the split complements, red yellow (orange) and red purple on the Munsell color wheel. The first painting is fully saturated except for the sky and water (thin glazes show the white of the canvas). I have decreased the hues’ saturation (intensity) of the second image with the complements of the colors. For example, I used the red hue to decrease the saturation of the blue green colors. Red is the Munsell color wheel complement of blue green. When you alter the intensity of the hue, you also change the value (black and white gray scale). In my above painting the addition of red to the blue green hue made the value darker. When you alter the intensity you may also alter the hue.

Painting Value, Hue and the Munsell Color Wheel

In my prior post, I used my painting to discuss the value (black and white gray scale) of the bottom shape. I said that the hues (colors) of the dark reflection under the bridge, the reflections of the underside of the bridge, bridge and the water were similar in value. I continued to paint keeping these values similar. I liked the large curved shape I had with these similar values. The large shape shows a dynamic movement rising from the bottom of the painting. In prior posts I have talked about the triadic color wheel. This wheel has 3 primary hues (yellow, red, blue) and 3 secondary hues (orange, green, purple). These secondary hues are made from the primary colors. There are other types of color wheels. The Munsell color wheel is popular among artists as complementary colors are more exact. Painting's Compositional Structure, Value, Hue, Shape

I am currently working on the above painting. The hues (colors) of the dark reflection under the bridge, the reflections on the water of the underside of the bridge, bridge and the water are similar in value (black and white gray scale). As I continue to work on my painting I am keeping these values similar. I like the large curved shape I have created with these similar values. I feel the large shape shows a dynamic movement rising from the bottom of the painting.

Painting "Rainy Day Street", Value, Temperature & Compositional Structure

This is my new painting, Rainy Day Street (acrylic on canvas). I described the mood of a rainy day in the city. While I painted this in an impressionistic style, there are few impressionist paintings of a rainy atmosphere. It was difficult for the impressionists to paint outside in the rain; the impressionists liked to paint light and color. My painting has a dominant middle value; the dominant color temperature is cool. The compositional structure is verticals and diagonals. I painted the sky with vertical brush strokes (not horizontal or oblique). I wanted to emphasize the vertical movement of rain.

When raining, there is no direct sunlight and there is little contrast between light and shadow. There are reflections on the road and pavement. Diagonal Direction in Paintings

Diagonal directions are more dynamic than horizontal. They add movement and also contribute to perspective. Diagonals contrast well with strong vertical directions. This is seen in French artist’s Degas above painting, Ballet Scene, and my painting, The Corner Store. Skies are better if they are a diagonal shape. Diagonal directions also suggest conflict.

Analysis of a Painting, Dominance, Repetition, Movement

My painting, The Corner Store is acrylic on canvas (20.4 by 25.5 cm, 8 by 10 inches). I painted with loose expressive brush strokes and little detail. This is similar to art by the impressionists, i.e. Monet. The painting is a dominant light value (gray scale); there is some middle tone and less dark value. The painting has a dominant warm temperature. The focal point is the man with the black hat. There are several ways into the painting and towards my focal point, i.e. the path, the awning, the boxes. I have used all colors twice but my color trail is the yellow hue. I have also repeated the triangular shape; this repetition helps move viewers around the painting. There is a triangular shape at the front right canvas. There are 3 triangular shapes at the top; the yellow section of the awning, the tree and the light blue sky shape.

Painting the Color of the Sky, My Painting, "The Corner Store"

This is my new painting, The Corner Store (acrylic on canvas). My goal was to do loose brush work. In this post I talk about sky colors. There are images of the sky in saturated color and gray scale (value); before I painted the trees. We are familiar with vertical atmospheric perspective; the blue sky moves from the zenith to the horizon. The sky gets lighter as we move towards the horizon. At the horizon, the sky can be light blue, muted orange or warm gray. There is also a color change horizontally as we approach the sun. In my painting, the sun is coming from the far left. The sky is lighter as you approach the sun; it is warmer closer to the sun. In my painting, I have used a green.

The Cross as Compositional Structure in Art, Artist van der Weyden

The above painting is by Flemish artist, Rogier van der Weyden (1399-1464). The compositional structure in his painting, The Descent from the Cross (1435), is based on the Latin cross. Viewers first see the important vertical line. The line is the direction of gravity. The pose of the Virgin Mary, repeats the pose of the Christ figure including the two figures that hold her as she falls. This pose was new for Flemish art; a technique of van der Weyden. The canons of Denis the Carthusian (Roman Catholic theologian and mystic) stressed the consequence of the Virgin Mary and her belief in Christ's spirit at the moment of his death. Denis expresses the conviction that the Virgin Mary was near death when Christ died; Van der Weyden's painting suggests this idea.

Compositional Structures for Groups in Paintings, Artist Caravaggio

There are a few ways to structure groups in paintings. Two structural compositions are the oval and the triangle. You can also separate the figures into one large and one small group. The main figure and focal point can be in either group. In the painting, The Musicians, Italian artist, Caravaggio balanced the three shapes on the right with the fourth shape on the left. Exiting a Painting, The Artist Chardin

Artists need to include entrances into and movement around paintings. Artists must also ensure viewers have a single way to leave a painting. An exit out of a painting should be natural and not obvious. Viewers must first have the chance to move around the painting. Paintings should not have more than one exit point. In the painting by French artist, Jean Baptiste Chardin (The Provider), there is a small area of blue sky above the left far door. This allows us to exit the painting. Triangular Compositional Structure, Three Shapes: Artist Thomas Eakins

I previously wrote about the triangular compositional structure. The triangle on its vertical midline is stable. The apex of the triangle is a location of emphasis. This structure is excellent for uniting 3 shapes. American artist, Thomas Eakins (1844–1916) painted the second above painting, The Chess Players (1876). Eakins used a triangular composition. The focal point is the standing figure at the apex. (H. Poore, Composition in Art; N. Triangular Composition & Attraction of Figure, Artist Cezanne

This painting is by French artist Paul Cezanne (1839-1906); the painting is An Old Woman with A Rosary (1895-1896). I have added red lines to the second image. The overall compositional structure is a triangle. When the triangle is on its base, there is stability to the painting. The top of the triangle will attract the most attention. In the large triangle from the bottom of the image, the apex is at the head of the woman. The bottom triangle’s apex is at the hands. Even without a triangular composition, viewers are first attracted to the head. After the head, viewers are attracted to the hands and then the figure. Horizontal Compositional Structure & Use of Light, Artist Edward Hopper

American artist, Edward Hopper painted the above painting, Early Sunday Morning (1930). I like the way the sun shines from the right and the light on the barber’s pole, fire hydrant and the left half of the blinds. Hopper used a horizontal compositional structure and this structure adds tranquility to the scene. The lines and shapes are parallel to the ground plane and therefore do not resist the pull of gravity. The lines and shapes appear at rest. The painting is balanced by the lesser number of vertical lines and shapes, i.e. barber’s pole, building on the upper right, vertical doors. (H. Poore, Composition in Art; N. Balance & Location in Paintings, Artist Winslow Homer

I have written about the need for balance in paintings. Balance is a feeling of stability achieved through visual weight, attention or attraction of the elements of art. In this painting by American artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910), Breezing Up (1876) Homer achieves balance for the foreground shape by the location of the smaller ship in the background. The larger ship in the foreground is close to the centre point of the painting. The smaller ship balances this shape because it is near the edge of the painting: it is in the distance. The small ship is isolated. These three locations have more visual weight than shapes closer to the centre and foreground. (H. Poore, Composition in Art)

Use of Light and Dark in Art, Artist Honore Daumier

In a prior post, I wrote about the brilliant light achieved with the use of dark values (gray scale). The above painting is by French artist, Honoré Daumier (1808 –1879). In his painting, The Chess Players (1863), the light is shining from the left side. The player on the right side has his face, left shoulder, hand and left arm in light. The wrist and hand of the other player is also illuminated by light. Part of the chess board is in the light. Balance in Paintings, The Artist Cezanne

Balance is an important principle in painting. The above painting is by French artist, Paul Cezanne (1839-1906). It is titled Still Life with Peppermint Bottle (1894). Balance is a feeling of stability accomplished by visual weight, attention or attraction using the elements of art, i.e. warm colors have more visual weight. There is a strong vertical direction in Cezanne’s painting. The viewer immediately sees the wine bottle and decanter. The dark vertical rectangle is in the top centre of the painting. The Brilliance of Light Areas in Paintings, Artist Hassam

This painting is by American impressionist artist, Childe Hassam (1859-1935). The painting is called Horse Drawn Cabs at Evening, New York. Although an impressionist, Hassam used values (gray scale) to create atmosphere and brilliance. The dominant value is dark mid tones. There are some light values, i.e. the house on the right side, on the wet street. The brilliance of light is strengthened by the dark areas. The brilliancy of light results is greater when the light area is smaller than the dark area.

Rothko's Paintings @ the AGO's Abstract Expressionist Exhibit, Study of Color

In my prior post, I wrote about New York’s Museum of Modern Art’s Abstract Expressionist exhibit at Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario. I noted that artists were influenced by surrealism, World War II and the Holocaust. They felt a need to create a new and expressive art that chronicled the doubt of the post war environment. The above painting is by American artist, Mark Rothko (1903-1970). In my opinion this painting, No. 5/No. 22 (1950) is non objective art. In abstract art, artists base their forms on natural objects. Their abstractions can vary from a likeness to the object to non familiar forms. Abstract art is different from non-objective art. Non-objective art is based on the artist’s imagination and not derived from anything the artist perceived.

If you are interested in studying the elements of art particularly color, Rothko’s paintings are worthy of study. Rothko used masses of color to have shapes float above and below the picture plane, i.e. cool colors recede, warm colors advance. He used soft edges. When you view this painting “rectangles appear to hover just over its surface. Each of the work’s coloured segments, when stared at individually, affect how you perceive the colour of those adjacent to it. Despite this, Rothko did not want his pictures appreciated solely for their visual qualities. He said, "If you are only moved by colour relationships, then you miss the point. I'm interested in expressing the big emotions—tragedy, ecstasy, doom."

I saw New York’s Museum of Modern Art’s Abstract Expressionist exhibit at Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario. These artists were influenced by surrealism, World War II and the Holocaust. They felt a need to create a new and expressive art that chronicled the doubt of the post war environment. Although the exhibit is primarily paintings, I particularly enjoyed the gelatin silver prints by U.S. photographer Aaron Siskind (1903-1991). Siskind was considered by many to be the father of modern photography. His work was based on shapes, textures and tones (value, gray scale) making abstract compositions. His photos were not an indication of the world; they were photos of torn billboards and textured surfaces where subjects were not significant.

Orozco repeats the shapes of the Zapatistas across the horizontal support. The Zapatistas slant in the same direction. The repetition and direction of the figures create the illusion of movement. In a prior post I wrote about surrealist artist Magritte. Surrealism emphasized unreality through the subconscious mind. Greek artist, Giorgio de Chirico (1888–1978) was also a surrealist painter. Chirico’s above painting, Piazza d’Italia, shows his use of shadow and value contrast (gray scale). Chirico used value to express a forlorn, solitary mood.

Surrealist Art & the Illusion of Space, Artist Magritte

I have done several posts about achieving the illusion of space in paintings. There are many techniques, i.e. use of the elements, linear perspective to achieve this illusion. Belgian artist, René François Ghislain Magritte (1898–1967) was a surrealist artist. Surrealism was a style that emphasized unreality through the subconscious mind. Magritte’s objective was to challenge viewers’ awareness of reality. In his above painting, The Human Condition (1935), Magritte used unusual space to astound viewers.

Gradations in Painting, Achieving Space & Depth

Gradations in the elements of art, i.e. size, value (gray scale), and color create the illusion of space and depth. Similar shapes and forms with these changes are seen as being in different positions. A smaller form or a cooler shape is seen as further back in space. The illusion of space is most successful when gradation is gradual. In my painting, The Wreck, the sky and water gradually become lighter as they recede towards the horizon. The green hills in the background are small.

Pre Raphaelite & Symbolism, Burnes-Jones' Art

British artist Edward Burne-Jones’(1833-1898) teacher was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Pre-Raphaelite artists believed that the classical poses and graceful compositions of Raphael and others had harmed art. They preferred more detail, intense colours and intricate compositions in paintings.

Burne-Jones’ was also interested in symbolism. Symbolist artists considered subjective, symbolic, and decorative purposes. Burne-Jones’ figures are well modeled and sensual. His above painting, The Golden Stairs (1880) is done with limited hues (colors). The composition is a semi circle of figures on the stairs. The women appear almost indistinguishable with their like dresses and bare feet. The golden color of the stairs is the same as the skin tone. One woman is seen gazing at viewers. Some women’s heads are surrounded by light. The light along with their bare feet make them appear like goddesses or angels.

Depicted Movement in Sculptures, Barlach's The Avenger

I have written about the illusion of movement in paintings. There may also be an illusion of movement in sculptures. There are two types of movement in sculptures. There is actual movement, i.e. mobile sculptures. There is also depicted movement. The above sculpture, The Avenger (1914, bronze) by German artist, Ernst Barlach implies movement. The long broad horizontal and diagonal directions of the robe’s edges and the forward thrust of the head and shoulders contribute to the illusion of movement. (O. Ocvirk et al, Art Fundamentals Theory and Practice) The base of the sculpture is a downward wedge. Barlach did this sculpture at the beginning of the first world war when he was a nationalist; it represented the unstoppable force of the German army. Several war memorials by Barlach including a wooden version of The Avenger along with other art were removed by the Nazis as offensive to the national sensibility.

Movement in Painting, Balla's "Dog on a Leash"

In prior posts, I discussed ways to achieve movement in paintings. In his painting, Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash (1912), Italian artist Giacomo Balla used several techniques to obtain the appearance of motion. Balla used vague contours in this painting. He also used repetition of shape and he overlapped these shapes. The dog’s legs and woman's feet are a blur of many images. Balla also used insecure placement. There is no cast shadow. (N. Goldstein, Design and Composition). Artists have used many methods to achieve movement.

Van Gogh's Colors & Perspective in Painting

Dutch artist, Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) painted 3 versions of Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles. This painting is his first done in 1888. Van Gogh used brilliant colors. Linear perspective is skewed as the planes do not converge at a vanishing point.

Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo about this painting and his color choice:

This time it simply reproduces my bedroom; but colour must be abundant in this part, its simplification adding a rank of grandee to the style applied to the objects, getting to suggest a certain rest or dream. Well, I have thought that on watching the composition we stop thinking and imagining. I have painted the walls pale violet. The ground with checked material. The wooden bed and the chairs, yellow like fresh butter; the sheet and the pillows, lemon light green. The bedspread, scarlet coloured. The window, green. The washbasin, orangey; the tank, blue. The doors, lilac. And, that is all. There is not anything else in this room with closed shutters. The square pieces of furniture must express unswerving rest; also the portraits on the wall, the mirror, the bottle, and some costumes. The white colour has not been applied to the picture, so its frame will be white, aimed to get me even with the compulsory rest recommended for me. I have depicted no type of shade or shadow; I have only applied simple plain colours, like those in crêpes. [Emphasis added.]

Color, Modeling, Cloth in My New Still Life Painting

I am currently working on the above painting. Most artists start a painting with a goal. My goal was to make the cloth under the apples as a thin material with passive, lying wrinkles. I used a muted green cloth to enhance the complementary red color of the apples. The light is from the right side. The viewpoint is overhead. I carefully modeled the apples to create space and third dimensional forms. I used color temperature and value (gray scale) to model the apples and cloth.

Artist Monet, A New Art Movement, Impressionism

The above painting, Impression: Sunrise (1872) was painted by French artist, Claude Monet (1840-1926). The painting’s title gave rise to a new movement in art, impressionism. Light and color were important elements to Monet. Expressive brushstrokes were used. In this painting, the sun’s color and reflections on the water are stressed. You can see the many brushstrokes that underscore color and light.

Artist Goya, His Use of Light, Color, Repetition in Painting

Spanish artist, Francisco de Goya (1746-1828) did the painting, The Third of May, 1808 in 1814. Goya painted with loose brushstrokes and excellent use of color and light. The Third of May, 1808 is about a revolt in Madrid against the French occupation. There are 2 main gatherings of people; the firing squad and the captives. Goya repeated the soldiers’ inflexible bearing and the row of rifles. The victims are in uneven positions. The lantern throws a strong light on the victims. The focus is on the male victim with his arms up. The colors of his clothing are repeated in the lantern. Goya used color to model the forms.

The Landscape Paintings of Artist Corot

This painting, Souvenir de Mortefontaine (1864) is by French artist Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875). Corot was from the Barbizon school of painting; a movement of realist artists. His early paintings were realistic. His following works had more romantic elements. (The romantic artists painted with a dramatic and exotic style.) Later Corot’s art slanted toward impressionism. Corot was much admired by the impressionists. This painting’s landscape is painted with broad strokes of paint and Corot underscored light and luminosity. The light sifts through the trees. The scene is serene and the reflections on the water are soft and restrained.

Painting Movement, The Artist Marcel Duchamp

In prior posts I wrote about portraying movement in art. This painting, Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912) is by French artist, Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968). Duchamp was interested in illustrating movement. Duchamp suggests action by several overlapping images of a figure. The dark outlines of the figures also suggest action lines, a row of people. These lines emphasize the force of the moving figure. Duchamp’s art was influenced by the Cubists and Futurists. Futurists were interested in creating movement of figures and objects.

Elements and Principles of Art in My Still Life Painting

I wanted to again consider my unfinished painting, Still Life and Pear. The dominant color temperature is cool. The dominant value is mid tone (gray scale). There are 4 positive shapes. Objects or figures in a field are positive shapes; grapes, pear, tomato in my painting. The surrounding fields are negative shapes; negative shapes are in the background (and foreground). Good paintings require different size shapes. In my painting, the single grape is small. The tomato is small to mid size. The pear and cluster of grapes are large. Harmony is also a principle of art. Harmony occurs when elements are the same or similar. The hue (color) of the pear and foreground are similar and harmonious. The forms and shapes of my positive objects are harmonious (spheres and circles respectively). When I first painted the background, it was a cool blue. I found this color too cool and intense. I dulled the background with a layer of muted orange paint. I discussed texture in a prior post. The muted blue violet background has depicted texture.

Painting a Sculptural Image, My New Still Life

This is my current unfinished painting, Still Life and Pear. (I will be doing more work on the grapes.) I was interested in achieving a sculptural image. The artist Michelangelo was well known for painting figures that conveyed a sculptural image. To achieve this goal, I carefully modeled my forms with warm light and strong cool form shadows. I took into account the geometric forms identified by Cezanne; spheres and cone (top of pear). The size of the fruit is huge. The blue background provides depth.

Artist Cezanne's Use of Color, Light and Composition

French artist Paul Cezanne (1839-1905) was a post impressionist artist. He investigated objects and areas around them. Cezanne’s work influenced the Cubists. His painting, Apples and Oranges (1899) shows his use of color to model form, light and composition. The picture is on an undefined plane. The design of the fabric is an interesting shape. Cezanne propped his objects in different positions that altered the traditional picture plane and perspective.

Baroque Art and the Artist Rubens

Baroque Flemish artist, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1639), was known for his wonderful compositions and colors. I particularly like his flesh colors as seen in this painting, The Three Graces (1635). Rubens linked his forms, colors and lights. The forms are modeled with a warm light. His nude female forms were sensual and curvaceous. Baroque artists were motivated by drama and the theatre. The art conveyed extreme emotions.

Texure in Paintings, Actual and Depicted

Texture in painting is the quality of a material on the support which can be felt or be an illusion. Actual texture is a texture that can be felt on the support. Depicted texture is made by the artist to occur as an illusion. A pattern with repeated elements or a design is also referred to as texture. In his painting, Glass and Bottle of Suze (1912), Picasso pasted papers on his support. This is actual texture. In my painting, Fruit at the Tea Market, I painted the texture of wood in the background, depicted texture.

Overlapping Shapes in Painting Create Space

Overlapping of shapes and forms in painting is a powerful technique to create space. When an overlapped shape is larger, warmer in temperature or has stronger elements that advance shapes, the overlapped shape will be seen behind the overlapping shape. On the left side of my painting, Burpee Tomatoes, the cooler green tomato is seen in front of the warmer orange tomato. This is despite the fact that warm colors advance and cool colors recede.

Color, Shape & Picture Plane in my New Still Life Painting

I previously wrote about my painting, Fruit at the Tea House. I plan to make a few minor changes before I post if for sale. This painting has a dominant warm temperature; this is contrasted with the cool temperature of the melon and front shelf. The design is primarily circular. There are also strong vertical and horizontal lines and shapes. The background has vertical lines but it also has strong horizontal shapes for balance and contrast. The front shelf has strong horizontal shapes. The bananas are mainly diagonal but combine to a reverse triangular shape. Like many of my still life paintings, my objects are close to the picture plane (the flat surface and the transparent plane at the front of the painting). My forms are modeled to create a feeling of the third dimension and depth.

Artist Jackson Pollock's Representational Paintings

This painting, Going West (1934-1935), is by U.S. artist Jackson Pollock (1912-1956). Pollock is well known for his abstract and non objective paintings. Like many artists, Pollock changed his style and techniques over time. He was to drip paint on canvas. In his painting, Going West, we view Pollock’s swirling patterns and rhythms. The upper part of the painting is mainly done with cool temperatures and the lower part is primarily done with warm temperature colors (hues). Curves are dominant and the forms are modeled. This representational painting is similar to Mexican murals.

Changes Artists Make to Paintings

This is a painting I am currently doing (28.05 by 35.7 cm, 11 by 14 inches). Artists look at the original subject and make changes to improve their paintings and personal goals. The fruit was on a stand in an indoor mall. There was overhead flood lighting as well as secondary lighting. I only used overhead lighting to make the modeling of my forms stand out. The background wall was a light value (gray scale). I made the background dark to contrast and enhance the light on the fruit. There was considerable clutter in the background. I eliminated the clutter and simplified the background. The bottom shelves were white. I made them a muted blue to enhance the orange color (hue). The shelf and the bottom of the melon are close in value. I wanted to link these shapes. I expect to make more changes as I continue to work on my painting.

Abstract or Non Objective Art, Artist Georgia O'Keefe

U. S. artist, Georgia O’Keefe (1887-1986) was known for paintings that leaned in the direction of abstraction. Her above painting, Red Amaryllis (1937) shows her color contrasts between the flower and background. The painting supports abstraction. In abstract art, artists base their forms on natural objects. Their abstractions can vary from a likeness to the object to non familiar forms. Abstract art is different from non-objective art. Non-objective art is based on the artist’s imagination and not derived from anything the artist perceived.

Artist Seurat's Scientific Style of Painting, The Can-Can

This painting by French artist, Georges Seurat is Le Chahut (The Can- Can, 1889-1890). Here, post impressionist artist, Seurat (1859 – 1891) used his scientific brand of painting centred on rules. In a prior post I wrote about his pointillist style, painting dots of broken color optically mixed by the viewer’s eyes. In this painting Seurat also used diagonal directions to generate happiness and move the viewers. The diagonal directions of the dancers’ legs are repeated in the direction of the instruments and the eyes and mouths of the dancers. The warm yellow hues are enhanced by the cool blue in the shadows.

Line in Painting, Modigliani's Caryatid

This painting is by artist, Amedeo Modigliani (1881-1920). The painting is one of Modigliani’s Caryatid’s (1913). His delicate, stylized art was based on line. He primarily painted female nudes and portraits. Modigliani used line to define the face, form and contours. He later filled the areas with flat colors. A Caryatid is an architectural supporting column in the shape of a female figure. In the painting, line marks the figure's outer and inner contours and is in front of a plain background. Modigliani cared for sculpture and his series of Caryatids showed this attraction.

Landscape Painting, "Mountains and Waterholes"

This is my painting, Mountains and Waterholes. It is acrylic on canvas mounted on wood stretcher bars. The painting is based on the complementary colors (hues), orange and blue. It has a dominant warm temperature. It has four major shapes. The compositional structure is convergence. The shapes converge at the point where the 2 mountains connect. The light is from the left. Many people prefer the complementary pair, orange and blue. Red and green are very close in value (gray scale) and yellow and violet are far apart in value.

Picture Plane & Design Principles in My Still Life Painting

This is my unfinished still life painting. In my prior post I wrote about the L shape compositional structure. I also painted this still life in vertical format and not the calm horizontal format. I also like my shapes close to the picture plane. I studied and am interested in abstract design principles. This is one reason why I place my shapes close to the picture plane. It is not necessary to have the shapes close to the picture plane with design principles. I like the animation and shapes I achieve with this technique.

L Shaped Compositional Structure in Paintings, My Still Life

This still life painting is not yet finished. While many would consider the compositional structure triangular, I consider it an L shape compositional structure. In looking at compositional structures, artists can identify possible problems. In the L shape structure it is important to integrate the remaining area with the L shape. It is for this reason that I used a textured pattern in the background. In this painting I am using 2 pairs of complementary hues; orange and blue, red and green. I wrote about using color to model form. I used color to model the vase, bowl and grapes. The light is from the left and the form shadow is on the right. The value on the objects gets darker (gray scale) as they turn away from the light. I was also interested in painting the translucent grapes.

Achieve Space & Model Form with Color Temperatures in Paintings

In a prior post, I wrote about the use of color to express emotions. Color in art may also be used to provide a third dimension in your paintings and model form. Space is a lighter value (gray scale) as you move into depth. Since warm colors advance and cool colors recede, artists can create an object, i.e. apple, with spatial quality by using color temperatures. The French artist, Cezanne was a master at using color temperatures as you can view in his above painting. Cezanne used color temperatures to model form.

Art's Expressive Color Use in Paintings

Color in art has many uses. One use is to express emotions, feelings and mood. The above painting, Mother and Child (1928) was painted by French artist, Marie Laurencin (1883 – 1956). The artist used color to express an affectionate, warm-hearted mood. The image in values (gray scale) shows little contrast except for the eyes and parts of the background. The warm and muted hues provide viewers with a loving, delicate image. Components of color are hue,value and intensity. Artists use these components to express the mood of their paintings.

Color in Still Life Paintings, Artist Chardin

Artist, Chardin was known for his masterful still life paintings (French, 1699 – 1779). Jean Baptiste Simeon Chardin used colors and blended light and shadow to achieve volume and depth. His painting, Still Life with Plums and Nuts (1765), shows his skill with realist paintings. He used a variety of color intensities. The compositional structure is a triangle. The background is painted with a gradation of light. The objects are carefully modeled. I am painting a series of still life art and Chardin's work is well worth studying.

Artist Jan van Eyck, Father of Oil Painting

Flemish artist, Jan van Eyck (1390 – 1441) is known as the father of oil painting. While he did not invent oil painting, he found new ways to paint with this medium particularly glazing. He painted light and color in a naturalistic style. The above painting, Man in a Red Turban (1433) is thought to be a self portrait. Van Eyck’s use of glazing transparent layers of paint over dry layers of paint resulted in intense, vivid color.

Artist, Seurat, His Paintings & Pointillism

Post impressionist French artist, Georges Seurat (1859 – 1891) expanded on Vermeer’s pointillist style, painting dots of broken color optically mixed by the viewer’s eyes. This painting, Bathers at Asniers (1882 – 1884) was not painted with pointillist technique but Seurat later added areas of dots to create a luminous style. You can see dots of complementary colors, blue and orange added to the hat. Seurat used clear color and forms. His compositions were academic in nature. Notice the white lines behind the two major figures. The lines push the figures forward from the background and emphasize these figures.

While he painted few landscapes, his impact on other landscape artists was significant. Vermeer’s work emphasized clarity. His paintings are acknowledged for his light, luminosity and objects. Color in Art; My Still Life Painting, Flower and Fruit

This is my painting, Flower and Fruit Still Life. The dominant temperature is cool. I mentioned in my prior post that I worked with 2 pairs of complements; orange and blue, green and red. The dominant value is mid dark tones. While the objects are close to the picture plane, I made the background recede into space. I also changed the hue and value in the background. The color moves from dark black green to mid muted green. I made black by mixing a violet red with yellow green. I needed to add the orange hue elsewhere in my painting. I put some on the leaves. I couldn’t see another location that would suit my expressive purpose. The light source is from the above left side.

Shapes in Art & My Still Life Painting

I am currently working on this still life painting. I wish to discuss shape. Shape is an area enclosed by a line or values. It is considered best to have an odd number of shapes. In my painting, I had planned to paint a third orange at the left side of the vase. My design is close to the picture plane and I felt this addition would not work. Shapes should also be unified. My positive shapes are circular and oval. Negative shapes are the background (back wall and table). I am using 2 pairs of complements; orange and blue, green and red. I plan to darken and dull the bottom 2 leaves and soften edges of the flower.

A Different Composition for My Still Life Painting

This is my new still life painting, Mixed Fruit. It is on 20.4 by 25.5 cm (8 by 10 inch) canvas. The second image highlights eye movement through the painting. Many still life paintings are serene and calm; I wanted to make my painting dynamic and exciting. A horizontal format is calm. I used a vertical format that suggests energy and strength. The berries are close to the picture plane and therefore animated. The eye movement through the painting is rapid. The similar shapes and hues (color) of the orange colored fruit ensure a quick movement through the painting. The viewer moves from the berries along the path of the orange fruit. The eye then moves to the banana and back to the berries. The eye moves again through the painting. The muted background provides a resting place for the viewer. The compositional structure is triangular. The focal point is the orange colored fruit at the top of the triangle. The top of a triangle has strong visual weight. Artist, Artemisia Gentileschi & Her Paintings

This painting is by Roman artist, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 - 1652). The painting is Susanna and the Elders (1610). Gentileschi was abused as a woman and an artist. Her paintings reflected the abuse she suffered. She was one of the first female post Renaissance artists to achieve recognition. In the biblical painting, Susanna is astonished by two judges who attempt to rape her. Gentileschi was also raped and her paintings reflect this abuse and the abuse she faced at the trial of her rapist. Susanna is modeled and sensual. The figure in the red cape expresses his evil intentions. Gentileschi used tenebrism to emphasize important objects in her paintings. Tenebrism is the use of a large dark area beside a smaller light area (and vice versa) to emphasize this contrast of value.

Radial Compositional Structure in My Painting, Amaryllis

The compositional structure in my painting, Amaryllis, is a radial burst. Shapes and forms burst from the centre, in this painting the top of the stems. The force of the burst usually makes this design structure out of place for still images. The design does have an expressive, impulsive action. This design also has repetition and alteration of the yellow blooms and violet background. This results in added movement across the picture plane.

My New Floral Painting - Amaryllis

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.

This is my new painting, Amaryllis. I received this beautiful plant as a gift. Although called an Amaryllis, research showed these plants are a Hippeastrum. The plants are a flowering bulb often sold in winter because of their ability to bloom inside. My plant had 2 stems. The buds were closed and had 4 flowers each when they bloomed. I was able to study the plant as it bloomed and took many photographs from different sides. I also took photographs with different lighting; frontal, side and back lighting. I placed a dark blue red in the background and was able to get colourful shadows. I made the background in my painting a muted green violet. Violet is the complement of yellow. The light source is from the left. The dominant value (gray scale) is middle tones. The painting is acrylic on 20.4 by 25.5 cm (8 by 10 inch) canvas mounted on wood stretcher bars.
